Our instructor, Jennifer Koenig, has been instructing yoga in the outdoors for three years, taking yoga to mountain tops, glaciers, and now to the San Juan Islands. Jennifer brings a great deal of experience from her Yoga Alliance Certification and having worked with yogis of all levels, all ages, and all abilities. Enjoy a daily practice inspired by the flora and fauna at your feet.

Sea Kayak Trip Itinerary

Duration: 3 day | Length: 25 miles | Season: June – August

Day 0 (Evening Before Trip): Welcome Yoga Class and Packing

Your Outdoor Odysseys guides will meet you in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island for a 4pm pick-up. Our van will take the group, which generally averages from 6-8 participants (maximum 12) to select site for a Welcome Yoga Class instructed by Jennifer. Set your mind and the tone for your 3-day journey and also prepare your body for next morning’s paddle! After class, your guides will provide you dry bags and packing instructions to take back to your overnight lodging, giving you plenty of time to prepare your belonging. Luggage and items that will not be joining you on your journey can be safely stowed at the Outdoor Odysseys Office that evening or the following morning. We will return you to your lodging by 7pm so you have time to grab a bite to eat and rest.

Day 1: Off the Mat and Onto the Water!

Your guides will pick you up at 8:30 a.m. to take you to our put-in site on the west side of San Juan Island. We’ll begin the morning with yoga class to awaken your muscles, joints, spine, and mind with views of Haro Strait. Before getting on the water, we’ll have a thorough orientation covering the fitting of the boat, paddling technique, safety and boat handling. We won’t get on the water until everybody feels comfortable about paddling. We’ll work our way northward kayaking along the picturesque west side of San Juan Island. We’ll keep a sharp eye out for whales as we’re in prime Orca habitat. We’ll have spectacular views of the Olympic Mountain range to the south and Vancouver Island to the west. After paddling for a couple of hours along the rocky, convoluted shores of San Juan Island and Henry Island we’ll stop for lunch, a 30 min gentle stretch, and some Yogi Play Time. After we cross Spieden Channel we’ll be paddling among forested, rocky islands including Spieden, Goose and John.

Our destination for the night is Reid Harbor and Stuart Island, which is only accessible by private boat. The campsites are nestled in a clump of red barked Madrona, Cedar and Douglas fir trees. After camp is set up, you can relax while your guides prepare your evening meal. Life doesn’t get much better when you’re sitting at a scenic, secluded waterfront campsite sipping on a glass of wine and eating superbly prepared food after a hearty day of paddling. Wind down the evening with a guided meditation under the stars.

Day 2: Hike, Paddle and Yoga!

On our second day, we’ll begin with some tea/coffee and a morning meditation. We’ll then enjoy breakfast before hiking out to an oceanside destination for inspirational views and a morning yoga practice. We’ll return to camp for lunch, then head out on the water for an afternoon paddle to explore more of Stuart Island, smaller uninhabited islands, and glide passed numerous birds including great blue herons, cormorants and bald eagles. We’ll return to our campsite on Stuart for an evening yoga practice and another delicious dinner. After dinner you’ll have the option of participating in an evening “bioluminescence” paddle.

Day 3: Return Journey!

Our third day will begin with our final morning yoga practice before we retrace our route back to our put-in site. We’re in prime whale territory again so our chances of seeing the J, K and L pod of resident Orca whales increases. We’ll have lunch and Yogi Play Time on a beach before arriving at our take-out location. Before departing for Friday Harbor we’ll have a group reflection and meditation out in nature to celebrate our journey!

You’ll have an hour or more to poke around town before boarding the ferry to Anacortes. Or, if you are spending the night, head back to your hotel or B & B for a well deserved shower and dinner on the town. Friday Harbor has a number of nice restaurants on the island that serve everything from classic Northwest fare to Thai food.

2017 Guide “Snapshot” – Jennifer Guid in Haro StraightJennifer sees the outdoors as an opportunity to better live physically and mentally, while creating a reciprocal relationship and appreciation of nature. She strives to create a truly unique outdoor experience based not solely on the obtainment of a goal, but rather the journey one finds along the way. Born and raised in Kansas City, MO, Jennifer’s first adventure out West was through family vacations following the Oregon Trail and Lewis and Clark Trail. This sparked her enthusiasm for the outdoors at a young age and she eventually made her way out to the San Francisco Bay Area. Here she spent ten years backpacking, sea kayaking, and hiking along the vast ocean sides and mountains in Big Sur, Tahoe, Point Reyes, Trinity Alps, Lost Coast, Channel Islands, and Yosemite, somehow managing to get a Masters in Nonprofit Administration along the way. Jennifer received her training in Southeast Alaska through the International Wilderness Leadership School, training as an instructor in mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, backpacking, whitewater rafting, and her true love, sea kayaking. Alaska deepened her love for plant and animal life, foraging, and outdoor cooking. She is also a Wilderness First Responder and certified in ACA River Rescue. Yoga is an integral part of her daily life that she believes can be practiced in any environment, even on a kayaking expedition!

Quick “Trip Facts”

Travel: Coming from Seattle? Most guests drive from Seattle to Anacortes & then take the ferry to San Juan Island.

Meeting Place & Time, Day 0: Meet at 4:00 P.M. the night before we launch in downtown Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, at the Friday Harbor ferry terminal.

Return Place & Time, Day 3: Friday Harbor ferry terminal, 4:00 – 5:00 P.M.

Lodging: There are three B&B’s within a short walking distance of the ferry terminal. Check out our lodging page for suggested accommodations info.

Luggage: We’ll store any luggage/gear you don’t want to take with you on your trip.

Gear You’ll Need: Yoga mat for, well, yoga! Appropriate clothing for kayaking and yoga, which go hand in hand (preferrably not cotton or denim – quick-dry, synthetic and/or athletic layers work best, and extra layers are always recommended), water bottle, sunglasses and/or hat, sunscreen, appropriate kayak footwear (Chacos, Tevas, Crocs and water socks are great footwise for paddling, and extra pair of shoes for camp), sleeping bag & pad.

We Provide: Kayaks & all related gear, tent, large & small dry bags, tasteful cuisine, transportation between Friday Harbor and our launch location; *sleeping bag & pad available for rent.

Age Requirements: Our minimum age is 16 years for our yoga kayak tours in the San Juan Islands. If you have questions or concerns regarding trips with children under the age of 12, please contact us directly for more information.

*What’s Yogi Play Time? This is a time where you can practice poses in a more casual setting with the assistance of your instructor. Is there an arm balance or an inversion you’d like to learn more about? Maybe you want to solidify your Warrior 2 or want to know more modifications for a pose? Feel free to ask and play around!
