Kayak Trip Cuisine
Our guides, Peter and Eli, were really outstanding. The food in particular couldn't be beat. I cant stress that enough; those guys should open a restaurant!
My husband is a vegetarian, I am not. Rarely do our diets converge. How amazing, then, that both of us found the food absolutely delicious! It was fresh, hot, abundant and imaginative. I especially liked the varietyso many different kinds of fruits and vegetables.

CAMARADERIE AND "FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD..."
The sport of sea kayaking is a really fun, active way to experience the numerous forested islets of the San Juan archipelago. And at the end of an exciting day of exploring and viewing wildlife you can look forward to an evening of good company and superbly prepared cuisine.
Outdoor Odysseys goes to great lengths to provide tasteful meals that will enhance your enjoyment of the wilderness experience. What could be better in life than watching the sunset from your campsite while savoring a glass of wine and enjoying delicious Northwest cuisine! (Here are some of our favorite camp recipes.)
We pride ourselves on serving quality food and pay special attention to our meals. Here are a few things that we offer that some San Juan outfitters do not...
-
Tastefully prepared lunches are served on all our tours!
-
We serve bottled wines (as opposed to boxed or none at all) as well as non-alcoholic beverages for dinner.
-
We are the only company that grows some of our own organic food as well as purchasing (and supporting) produce from locally grown farmers.
-
We don’t skimp on quality. We use real maple syrup, butter and good coffee the same quality food we eat at home why in the world would we serve our guests stuff like margarine or Aunt Jemima’s syrup on our trips?
- Our custom "Orca blend" coffee is fair-trade, organic, and shade-grown to delight your taste buds and provide you with a little extra "pep" in the morning. A portion of our special coffee costs is donated to the Whale Museum in Friday Harbor.
-
Finally, (and this is a small detail but often overlooked) we make sure we have plenty of energy food such as gorp (peanuts, raisins, M&M’s) on hand when you need a little extra ‘boost’ when paddling against the wind.

One of our trademark specialties is Dutch oven cookery. (None of our guests are thrilled with the prospect of lugging a heavy Dutch oven around in their kayak until they see what great tasting food these ‘puppies’ are capable of producing!) We use Dutch ovens for savory main dishes as well as for creating delicious desserts. If you are unfamiliar with "D.O." cookery, you'll become a believer after this trip!
With the exception of some seafood or deli turkey, all of our meals are vegetarian. We take special pride in our ability to provide options for guests that may have particular dietary concerns. If you are vegan or have specific food allergies we will gladly work with you to accommodate your needs. If you are gluten intolerant we put together a spreadsheet that our guides use when shopping that works in tandem with our regular menu to provide gluten free options.
- Here is an example of our ‘signature dinner' on our first night on the water: Smoked salmon pesto linguini with sun dried tomatoes and Kalamata olives, organically grown mixed salad greens, garlic bread and for dessert our Dutch oven pear/apple crisp.
- Desserts include: Double chocolate brownies with fresh whipped cream, seasonal fruit fondue dipped in a bittersweet chocolate ganache or freshly made carrot cake with cream cheese frosting.
- Our lunches are healthy and filling giving you energy to complete your day on the water: Deli-typ sandwiches with fresh sliced meats, cheeses garnished with a selection of veggies, condiments and locally baked breads. Other lunches include: Goat cheese, cashew, strawberry and fresh spinach wrap with clementine vinaigrette and greek salad with roasted peppers, capers, onion and served with humus and freshly baked French bread.
- Breakfasts is the most important meal of the day and may include a Dutch Oven spinach goat cheese frittata with caramelized onions; or an English muffin egg sandwich with fresh tomato, avocado, sauteed red onions and basil. Our breakfasts are always washed down with good cups of steaming hot coffee and quality teas. Having our roots in Seattle (home of Starbucks mania) makes us especially sensitive to a good cup o' java..!
