Barefoot Bandit’s Story Told

This last week the Barefoot Bandit came back on our radar. Bob Friel a good friend and local islander just released his book that follows the path of Colton Harris-Moore, the modern day outlaw that was finally apprehended in the Caribbean. The fact that no one was physically injured or killed during his 2 plus [...]

Join our naturalist guides for a fun, informative two day sea kayak tour on the west side of San Juan Island. San Juan County Park will be our base camp as we kayak Haro Strait between Vancouver and San Juan Island, the heart of the best whale habitat on the west coast for seeing Orca whales.

Scott Leighton (28) – 2nd Year Guide

“This one-day trip was a birthday present to my husband. We both loved it. It was my first time in a real kayak. Our guide, Scott, was very knowledgeable and fun … he was always singing! =0) We saw a few bald eagles, paddled right through kelp beds (which was way cool!) and had salmon [...]

Birthday Fun!

The folks on this week’s four-day sea kayak tour were in for a treat last night when a band of Outdoor Odysseys guides along with owner and founder Clark Casebolt showed up at their campsite on Jones Island to surprise the tour leader and birthday girl, Sarah Young. The group left San Juan Island in [...]

Chris Morgan (29) 2nd Year / MS in Marine Biology

Chris grew up in Cleveland, and, lacking mountains (and non flammable water!) moved to Colorado for his undergraduate degree. He majored in running around in the mountains (although some call it biology!) and developed an unquenchable thirst for being outside. This led to a semester long mountaineering and sea kayaking course with NOLS in South America. When Chris returned to the states and compared paddling in the fjords of Patagonia to Calculus 3, he knew that being outside was going to be a big priority in any future endeavors. After graduation, he moved to the Olympic Peninsula and worked as an Environmental Educator at Olympic National Park. He worked in the Olympics for 3 years and fell in love with the Pacific Northwest.

End of August

It’s been a nearly perfect week here on San Juan Island, both off the water and on. The annual San Juan County Fair began on Wednesday, and Friday Harbor has been packed with visitors. The weather, which has been less than ideal for much of the summer, has finally turned nice. The whales have been [...]

News from the Garden!

After a coolish spring and summer, the Outdoor Odysseys garden located on the outskirts of Friday Harbor, San Juan Island is finally coming into full bloom! We continue to have organic zucchini, squash, rhubarb, basil, and several varieties of lettuce to send out on our overnight trips, and just a few days ago we harvested [...]

Butterflies on San Juan Island

For such small and relatively isolated islands, the San Juans boast a variety of unique historical, geographical, and biological features. As I near the end of my first summer on San Juan Island, I continue to be amazed by the new things I learn about the San Juan Islands everyday. Aside from the Orca whales, [...]

Baby Names

August is here, meaning it’s time to name some baby Orcas! Four calves from the three pods of resident Orca whales that reside in the water off the west coast of San Juan Island will be given names this month by the San Juan Island Whale Museum. Read more about the four calves and vote [...]

Island Hopping in the San Juans

This past week, I had a friend in town who was visiting the San Juan Islands for the first time. Wanting to show her as much of the islands as possible (and wanting to do a bit of exploring myself!) I decided to take the opportunity to visit a couple of the other islands in [...]
